Candy Floss Fro Lollipops

This is a bit of a fun take on the never-ending debate surrounding natural black hair. It’s still a work in progress, but it’s turning out to be my favourite project to date. A new product in The Complexion Complex confectionary line I have been working on, this has a sense of duality to it. Evoking both empowerment and accountability - depending on who it is consumed by - the piece is just as powerful as it is fun. The song ‘Don’t touch my hair’ by Solonge Knowles always comes to mind when I look at these lollies, of which there are now ten in total. The facial features and size differs with each lolly; they each have their own distinctive characteristics but a sense of uniformity has been created with the hot pink colouring, and by giving each lolly the same hairstyle. They are clearly unique, but devoid of identity, unable to challenge or confront the viewer with a direct gaze as each of my other portraits do.

This painting (which I finished back in June 2018) is what inspired the lollies. I have always been fascinated by how delicious dyed afros look, and thoroughly enjoyed taking this visual and transforming it into something sweet.
